Hair System Size Guide: How to Measure for the Perfect Fit
Share
Choosing the right base size for your hair system is the single most important decision for a natural, secure fit. A well-fitted system stays invisible, comfortable, and secure through daily wear, exercise, and long workdays. This guide walks you through exactly how to measure your head and select the correct base size from our range.
Why Base Size Matters
A hair system that is too large will shift, bunch, and create pressure points. One that is too small will pull at the edges, look stretched, and compromise the natural hairline. The right size ensures:
- Secure fit — no movement, even during physical activity
- Natural hairline — the lace front sits flush against your forehead without stretching
- Comfort — even pressure distribution with no tight spots
- Durability — reduced stress on hand-tied knots and base material
Base Sizes We Offer
Our hair systems come in standard base sizes measured in inches (front width × back depth):
| Size | Best For | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| 5" × 7" | Narrower heads, top-only coverage | Crown to front hairline, tight fit |
| 6" × 8" | Average head size (most common) | Full crown with slightly wider sides |
| 6" × 9" | Average to larger heads | Extended back coverage |
| 7" × 9" | Larger heads, broader coverage | Wider front and extended back |
| 8" × 10" | Maximum coverage preference | Full head with generous overlap |
Step-by-Step: How to Measure Your Head
You only need a soft measuring tape (the kind tailors use). If you don't have one, a strip of paper and a ruler work fine. Have a friend help if possible, but it is doable alone with a mirror.
Step 1: Measure Your Front Width
Place one end of the tape at your left temple (where your forehead meets your sideburn) and stretch it across the front of your hairline to your right temple. This is your front width measurement.
Most men measure between 5.5" and 7.5" across the front.
Step 2: Measure Your Back Depth
From the center of your front hairline (where your forehead starts), run the tape straight back over the top of your head to the point where you want the system to end. This is typically the nape (base of your neck) or slightly above it.
Most men measure between 7" and 10" from front to nape.
Step 3: Choose Your Size
Match your measurements to our size chart:
- Front ≤ 5.5" and Back ≤ 7.5" → 5" × 7"
- Front 5.5"–6.5" and Back 7.5"–8.5" → 6" × 8"
- Front 5.5"–6.5" and Back 8.5"–9.5" → 6" × 9"
- Front 6.5"–7.5" and Back 8.5"–9.5" → 7" × 9"
- Front > 7.5" or Back > 9.5" → 8" × 10"
Between sizes? Always size up. A slightly larger base can be trimmed and shaped by a professional, but a base that is too small cannot be made larger.
First-Time Fit Tips
- Shave or trim short — if you have existing hair in the coverage area, trim it to 2–3 mm before applying. This creates a smooth surface for the base to bond to.
- Start with the front — align the lace front along your natural hairline first, then work backward.
- Check in natural light — look in a well-lit mirror from the front and both sides to confirm the hairline looks natural.
- Don't rush the first wear — expect 15–30 minutes for your first application. It gets faster with practice.
